Meet Chenai Kadungure, from Black Physicians Association of Ontario

One of Canada's Top 100 Black Women to Watch, Chenai has led international economic and community development non-profit programs in Sub-Saharan Africa, The Caribbean and North America. At the BPAO she's championing health equity and prior led Black Youth Success(BYS) in education equity. She's a Rotarian and sits on several boards including the Meta Centre and BORN Ontario Health Equity Advisory Group. She is a Globant Inspiring Leader nominee, Global News Hometown Hero and won Gold as a Migrant Leader for being a woman Changing the World.

When did you start your business?
I was recruited November 2021

What was the inspiration behind your work/business?
Too many unnecessary deaths in underserved communities. There are several gaps.

What are you most excited about in your work/business?
Uplifting others. Whether its coaching, mentorship, grants etc. I enjoy connecting people and opening doors for them to thrive. I want to see us all win!

What has been the most challenging thing about starting your work/business?
Sustainable Funding, dealing with conflict and insufficient resources.

What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a work/business?
Transformation work requires patience. You might not see the fruits of your labor, but must trust that a seed was sown.

Why did you enter the Women Changing the World Awards?
I wanted to really believe I had made an impact somehow.

What did you enjoy the most about being part of the awards?
Celebration. It's important and fuels us for the fight. There's also a sisterhood.

What surprised you most about the awards?
I don't think I was surprised by anything but was grateful that I could participate in something so amazing.

How did the awards help you in your work/business?
The recognition has definitely inspired awe and helped me show my mentees what is possible.

What advice would you give to other women thinking about entering the awards?
Do it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Never self reject.

What has been the best thing about starting your own work/business?
I'm about to start my coaching business and being brave enough to do it feels awesome.

What’s happening next in your work/business?
I'm working on a book and I'm working on a website.

What are your big plans for the future?
A possible podcast and more global projects are on the horizon.
