When did you start your business?
I started our first business pre-school and childcare centre in 2004. This is the birthplace of all our multiple businesses locally and abroad.
What was the inspiration behind your work/business?
The inspiration behind the establishment of my business were to create job opportunities for those diverse women who struggled to find jobs and likewise for me to have a job while caring for my children. And to further provide quality education for my children and other children in the community
What are you most excited about in your work/business?
One thing that excited me the most is seeing my culturally diverse staff members coming to work happy with big smiles on their faces. Likewise, seeing our customers happy and contented with the quality of services and education we provide across our businesses.
What has been the most challenging thing about starting your work/business?
The most formidable challenge in starting my business stemmed from my lack of prior experience in the childcare industry, compounded by the daunting task of caring for three children ranging from 4 months to 4 years old. Balancing the demands of entrepreneurship with familial responsibilities proved to be an intricate juggling act, particularly in the absence of full support, as my husband was committed to his full-time role at BOEING Australia.
Navigating the complexities of day-to-day operations of the business required me to wear multiple hats—from receptionist and bookkeeper to reliever, gardener, purchaser, supervisor, manager and director—all rolled into one. This is due to financial constraints that prevented us from hiring additional staff, compelling me to master various roles simultaneously in order to keep the business afloat.
What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a work/business?
To aspiring female entrepreneurs thinking of starting their own business ventures, my humble advice: seek assistance and establish connections within a supportive community of women. Collaborate with other women entrepreneurs and invest on mentorship as it lightens the challenges of entrepreneurship. Tap into the collective wisdom and experiences of fellow women in business, you can gain valuable insights, receive guidance, and find the encouragement needed to ease your business venture to succeed. Remember, you are not alone on this journey—surround yourself with a network of support, and together, you can conquer any obstacle and achieve your dreams.
