Shani was raised in a Sydney suburb with one of the highest numbers of homicides, kicked out of home at the age of sixteen and had to leave school before completing year 10. Living on the streets, she became an intravenous drug addict, a single mum at age 23, and then at the age of 27, she was held in a house under duress for two days by a family member who repeatedly sexually assaulted her, leaving her with post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and major depressive disorder.
