Meet Rev Dr Elitha Moyo, ELCZ Gender Justice Coordinator

Rev Dr Elitha Moyo attained her Doctor of Philosophy in Practical Theology from the University of South Africa in 2021. Her thesis “Gender inequality among ministers in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe (ELCZ): A Pastoral Womanist Critique of the exclusion of Female clergy from the top/Senior Leadership in the ELCZ”. She is passionate about addressing Gender issues in the Church and has been an advocate for Gender Equality amongst Ministers. She currently works as the Africa Regional Representative for Gender Justice and Program working with Companion churches in the region. She also holds different Certificates

When did you start your business?
I started working as Gender Justice Coordinator for my church Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe from 2012 to 2021

What was the inspiration behind your work/business?
As an ordained female pastor and a Pastoral care-giver to mostly women and girls listening to their stories it provoked my passion give awareness against gender inequality, injustice and against gender based violence. My University studies at Kwazulu Natal empowered to be fearless on my interventions.

What are you most excited about in your work/business?
For me is not about excited but about passion to see women included in top leadership positions of the Church or Community

What has been the most challenging thing about starting your work/business?
It was not easy gender justice was like breaking new ground, I was called names. My pastor colleagues were referred me as gender pastor stigmatized me as unholy pastor who engaged on circular issues.

What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a work/business?
What I can say is whoever want to engage in gender justice women human rights advocacy should be strong and ignore any push-back attempts that will try to discourage your efforts.

Why did you enter the Women Changing the World Awards?
I was nominated without knowing because of that especially that it was a women who nominated me I feel as a recognition of my work by my fellow women.

What did you enjoy the most about being part of the awards?
This was my first time I feel encouraged and energized on my work especially that my award was people’s choice, it means many people voted appreciated my work.

What surprised you most about the awards?
I was even shocked to hear that I won the first price, even today I am still in that shock especially when I received the trophy it increases joy in me.

How did the awards help you in your work/business?
The award as I already mentioned it energized me to do more work, knowing although not all people appreciate my work but there are also more who applause what I am doing.

What advice would you give to other women thinking about entering the awards?
My advice is that fear not just go for it with confidence as long as you know your work. God is for us all.

What has been the best thing about starting your own work/business?
This is a church program, the best thing for this program is the involvement of the church to speak on behalf of people about gender equality, justice and its intersectional issues.

What’s happening next in your work/business?
We continue with the program I started as my church Gender Justice Coordinator today I am Reprehensive for Gender Justice in the whole Africa Companion Lutheran Churches.

What are your big plans for the future?
My task now is to continue empower women in leadership and mentor other women and men to work for gender equality to improve communities and churches development
